Shaw Avenue, formerly CA 168 from CA 41 to Clovis Avenue, is one of Fresno’s busiest thoroughfares second only to Herndon Avenue two miles to the north.  The traffic lights were synchronized between Blackstone Avenue and Golden State Highway by time I was of temporary Fresno residence in Summer 2004.  The interchange has been scheduled for major upgrades for around 2006-2008.

Jensen Avenue (access to CA 41 North and South) was the only way to access CA 41 before 1998 when he freeway was extended to about two miles south of CA 99.  The 99/41 intersection is not a full intersection, meaning that a driver may not be able to change directly from one freeway to the other without using surface streets.  Thus, Jensen Avenue remains the only means of meeting CA 41 South from CA 99—only CA 41 North can be directly accessed.  Freeway CA 180 (which CA 99 meets several miles to the north) serves as a freeway link between CA 99 and CA 41, providing interchange in all directions.  Yet, as the second picture to the left suggests, I would recommend use of Jensen due to the fact that CA 41 lies only ½ mile to the west immediately after exiting CA 99.

This sign is one of the last signs to be replaced by CalTrans before they switched from button copy to retroflective in 2000.  Thus, its newness is noticeable.  This sign could either have a retroflective exit tab added in the future, or could be completely replaced with a new retroflective and numbered sign.  The former is more common in Southern and Northern California; the later is more common in Central California.

CA 198 serves as the recently completed east-west freeway to the east through Visalia into Three Rivers, Kaweah Lake and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and as an east-west connection between the CA 99 and I-5 for Tulare and Kings Counties.  CA 198 serves Hanford and Lemoore (where it meets CA 41) before arriving at I-5.

*No formal plans have been made thus far to re-number and/or re-designate CA 99 to I-7.  Yet, some media coverage has been recently dedicated to Central California  legislators who have in recent years been looking for ways to bring federal funds to the Highway 99.  At least one representative in Visalia, and Fresno’s mayor Alan Autry, are pushing to find loopholes to avoid the costly barrier of 150+ bridges that are too low; the goal is to give the highway from its southern terminus at I-5 which is 21 miles south of Bakersfield, to Stockton or Sacramento, an “Interstate” designation.  However, a couple of legislators in Shafter push for the more reasonable (and perhaps more continuous with the highway’s history) idea to redesignate the highway as a US route.  See the below sites which give reference to this:

Highway 99 “Master Plan”CalTrans suggests an I-9 designation.  See the link, “Final Draft.”

AAroads

This site lists I-7 as a potential number for the “interstate” designation of CA 99.
