was the only of the 48 contiguous states plus Hawaii not using freeway exit
numbers:

The two major Central California freeways (I-5 and CA99—US99
prior to 1964) split 20 miles south of Bakersfield to reunite 300 miles to the
north in Sacramento. This picture was
posted on a favorite site of mine before CalTrans implemented
the installation of exit numbers in 2002.

exit numbers and has pre-2000 button copy (non-reflective). The below picture shows the exact same
location of the I-5/CA99 split with newly installed retroflective
(brand new in California since 2000) billboards with the new exit number system
evident.
