U.S. 71

75th Street Eastbound about to pass under freeway 71.

The Paseo Boulevard Southbound bears an unusual guide sign, not to mention the fat that it is also a random place for such posting due to its location nowhere near a major street that would provide access to US 71.  This probably pre-dates the 71 freeway when the route followed Prospect Avenue—the street that the fairly new freeway parallels.

Thus sign assembly at Prospect Avenue and 63rd Street accurately shows that the freeway that parallels Prospect to the east is accessible via 63rd Street.  Yet, the problem is with the I-435 shiled, which simply does not tell the full story.  In reality, if one wanted to access I-435 to go to northeast KC metro, 63rd Street would be a better choice.  But, if one wanted to go to the southern portion of the KC metro, US 71 would be the best route.

Why the speed limit on US 71 near my house is 45MPH.  Yes, you are correct to see stop lights in the middle of an urban freeway and serving residents who have children crossing this death trap.  No wonder this project met so much opposition in recent years (this stretch is less than 3 years old according to people who live here).  Photos: 4-14-2005

Here’s a better example of this urban freeway that is halted by three traffic lights in a 2-3 mile stretch of US 71. I drive through here six to seven times per week.

Interstate 35

I-35 Northbound in the KCMO downtown area is part of a complex network of freeways.  I am bound for I-670/ALT I-70 toward Kansas City, Kansas.

Miscellaneous

A traffic light in an isolated part of Kansas City, KS, this is the intersection of Central Avenue and James Street.

In the opposite direction James Street takes a sharp left-turn on a bridge that carries over a wide array of railroad tracks which is also where James Street turns into 12th Street at the Missouri/Kansas state line.  It is just across the state line where I-670 is accessible.  No signs are posted at this state boundary, though.  To the north about ¼ mile is the UPS hub where I work.
